Setting New Standards in Quality and Service

Selman & Associates was founded by Juanita and Tom Selman in early 1983 with the idea of creating a platform to do a better job. Innovation has given the company a competitive edge for more than 40 years in the Southwest Region of the United States.

Led by Tom Selman, an experienced wellsite licensed professional geologist, the company was among the first to computerize surface logging. Selman has since logged thousands of wells using proprietary Windows applications developed in-house by loggers for loggers.

By separating computerized Data Acquisition from Data Processing, Selman developed an integrated approach that provides dependable geological intelligence, clearer reporting, and stronger operational support.

Innovation Built for Southwest Drilling

Selman continues to grow its professional geological organization through world-class services, close customer collaboration, and ongoing research and development. Selman & Associates’ U.S. patents reflect the company’s long-standing commitment to provide the highest level of practical oilfield innovation.

A majority of the company’s staff are degreed geologists supported by a comprehensive training program that extends from the classroom to the rig and beyond.

Certified Advanced Gas Detection

Selman wholly owns and develops the software used with its Certified Advanced Gas Detection equipment, applying more than 40 years of field experience.

Using Mass Spectrometry, Flame Ionization Detection, or both, the system is designed to provide faster sample speeds, more linear readings, more gas species, and lower detection limits.

  • Alkanes and paraffins
  • Naphthalenes and aromatics
  • Atmospheric compounds
  • Sulfur species
  • Additional hydrocarbon and formation-gas indicators

Up to 34 distinct gases can be measured every 10 seconds.

Digital Sample Pictures and Photo Logs

mobile application Selman advances digital photo microscopy through detailed Photo Logs that visualize each step of the sample-analysis process.

Using proprietary methods, lithology samples can be documented every 10 feet, even during rapid drilling. This creates a more detailed mud log and photo log that exceeds typical industry practices.

Selman’s standard two-person logging service includes Photo Log creation at no additional charge. The free LogIt® Viewer provides one-click access to full-sized images during and after drilling.

This virtual photo sample tray makes it easier to recognize changes, compare intervals, and correlate wells without committing extra manpower to future sample review.

Put the Rig in Your Pocket™

The Selman Surface Logging mobile application provides real-time access to logs, reports, streaming data, and cuttings sample pictures from an internet-connected smartphone or tablet.

  • View current logs and reports
  • Review streaming drilling data
  • Access cuttings sample photographs
  • Stay informed away from the office
  • Included with qualifying real-time logging services at no additional charge

Real-Time Access Wherever You Work

Field and office teams no longer have to wait for email updates or remain tied to a desktop computer. The mobile app helps authorized users access current and accurate information when and where decisions are being made.

This visibility strengthens communication among geologists, engineers, drilling personnel, and management across Southwest operations.

GeoChemical Surface Log

Selman’s geochemical services help unlock the potential of unconventional reservoirs by quantifying drill cuttings and formation gas while drilling.

  • Mass Spectrometry: measurements for up to 34 distinct gas species every 7-10 seconds
  • X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF): elemental composition of cuttings samples
  • X-Ray Diffraction (XRD): mineralogical content analysis
  • Total Organic Carbon (TOC): percentage of carbon from organic, non-mineral sources
  • Calcimetry: differentiation of limestone and dolomite plus total carbonate quantification

These measurements provide a richer view of reservoir quality, composition, and variability throughout the well.
